A New Conulariid (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa) From the Terminal Ediacaran of Brazil

چکیده
Paraconularia ediacara n. sp., the oldest documented conulariid cnidarian, is described based on a compressed thin specimen from terminal Ediacaran Tamengo Formation near Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. The was collected laminated silty shale bed also containing Corumbella werneri and vendotaenid algae. consists of four partial faces, two which are mostly covered, one exposed corner sulcus. faces exhibit 32 bell-curve-shaped, nodose transverse ribs, with some nodes preserving short, adaperturally directed interspace ridge (spine). ribs bend adapertureward shoulders sulcus, within terminate, end portions face alternating slightly overlapping those adjoining face. This first body fossil showing compelling evidence homology particular genus. However, unlike periderm Phanerozoic conulariids, P . lacks calcium phosphate, difference may be original or an artifact diagenesis weathering. discovery in corroborates hypothesis, part molecular clock studies, that cnidarians originated during mid-late Proterozoic times, serves as new internal calibration point, dating split between scyphozoan cubozoan at no later than 542 Ma. Furthermore, P. reinforces argument final phase biotic evolution featured advent large-bodied eumetazoans, including, possibly, predators.

Digenean Metacercaria (trematoda, Digenea, Lepocreadiidae) Parasitizing “coelenterates” (cnidaria, Scyphozoa and Ctenophora) from Southeastern Brazil
Metacercaria specimens of the genus Opechona (Trematoda: Digenea: Lepocreadiidae) are described parasitizing “coelenterates” (scyphomedusae and ctenophores) from Southeastern Brazil (São Paulo state). The worms are compared to other Opechona species occurring on the Brazilian coast, but no association has been made because only adult forms of these species have been described. Suppositions as t...
متن کاملA preliminary phylogeny of Pelagiidae (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa), with new observations of Chrysaora colorata comb. nov
The nomenclature of the purple-striped jelly® sh from southern California, currently known as Pelagia colorataRussell, 1964, is apparently in error. Our cladistic analysis of 20 characters for 15 pelagiid species indicates that P. colorata shares a common evolutionary history with members of the genus Chrysaora. There appears to be a number of characters shared among species of Chrysaora due to...
متن کاملMolecular evidence for cryptic species of Aurelia aurita (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa).
Morphological taxonomy suggests that marine faunas are species poor compared to terrestrial and freshwater faunas (1). This dichotomy has been attributed to the unique potential of marine plankters for distant dispersal across homogenous oceans with few barriers to gene flow (2). The relative scarcity of opportunities for allopatric divergence has resulted in depauperate marine faunas character...
متن کاملLife Cycle Reversal in Aurelia sp.1 (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa)
The genus Aurelia is one of the major contributors to jellyfish blooms in coastal waters, possibly due in part to hydroclimatic and anthropogenic causes, as well as their highly adaptive reproductive traits. Despite the wide plasticity of cnidarian life cycles, especially those recognized in certain Hydroza species, the known modifications of Aurelia life history were mostly restricted to its p...
